ANNUAL SUMMERLAND LIGHT UP
The Festival of Lights began 36 years ago, and has become a tradition since, when four Summerland businessmen—Jerry Hallquist, Art Sewell, Allan Fabbi, and Bruce Hallquist—launched the event under the auspices of the Downtown Business Improvement Area at the time. Initially conceived to highlight downtown Summerland businesses, the festival has grown significantly over the years. To kick off the festivities, the committee sold strings of Christmas lights to every merchant and building owner in the downtown area, selling approximately 25,000 lights in its inaugural year. The District of Summerland joined in by adorning streetlight poles and public buildings in the downtown area. At its inception, it was the sole festival of its kind in the Okanagan and has consistently drawn large crowds annually. From its modest beginnings, the Summerland Festival of Lights, which attracted an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 attendees at its first event, has persevered to become the only festival of its era to endure for over three decades. Today, it remains a cherished holiday tradition not just for Summerland but for the entire Okanagan region.
